The history of art embroidery is a mystery that owuld have even Nancy Drew scratching her head in bewilderment. But the intrepid investigations of Brenna Hopkins and Nori Koenig have pieced together some interestedin information. Few decorative themes were left untried by the designers of art embroidery patterns and kits. Despite the variety of subjects that can be found, a few beloved theemes have become almost synonymous with this embroidery form. Linen Heirlooms is a primer of the styles and motifs of an art form as it evolved from formality to whimsy to becoming a reflection of society - our likes, dislikes, fashions, humor and cultural pursuits. It's almost as if our mothers, grandmothers and aunts kept a visual history of themselves in an embroidery hoop and wrote their thoughts with thread.
