What carvers say
★★★★★I've carved for many years. This study stick has improved my carving dramatically. Wish I had purchased this years before now.
★★★★★Very good. Shows you how to carve in easy stages. Highly recommended for beginners and intermediate carvers.
★★★★★This is a good study stick. It demonstrates the steps a person needs to make a good cowboy carving.
Is the study stick wood or resin?
Hand-cast resin, stained to look like wood, about 12 inches tall with all four carving stages on one piece. It is cast from Harold's own originals — so the detail you are studying is his actual work, not someone's copy of it.
Do I carve the study stick itself?
It is a reference model, not a blank. You carve your own piece alongside it, holding it against whichever of the four stages you are working toward to see exactly where the next cut goes.
Do I need to buy wood separately?
Yes. Basswood for carving is not included — the stick is the guide, not the material.
What comes in the tube?
The study stick and a 32-page booklet with step-by-step photos for every cut Harold makes. It ships wrapped in a high-impact tube so nothing arrives chipped.
That 32-page booklet is not the same thing as the 144-page Carving Faces Workbook you get free with three sticks — the booklet covers the one face on your stick, the workbook covers the whole subject.
How does the free workbook work?
Pick any three sticks and the Carving Faces Workbook is added to your cart at no charge. There is no code to enter. Keep all three sticks in your cart through checkout to keep the workbook free.
