Description

Caret Down
The exquisite art of bonsai is beautifully demonstrated in this authoritative, practical handbook, which takes the reader from a first foray into the world of miniature trees to a level of considerable expertise. The book covers both indoor and outdoor varieties and is full of practical information about cultivation, propagation and pruning. It is a guide both for newcomers to the art as well as for bonsai gardeners with some knowledge of the subject. The handbook describes, in clear text, step-by-step illustrations, and finely detailed photographs, the anatomy and the art of this classic hobby. It describes the rules -- and also describes how they can be broken. It will enable beginners to start their own bonsai collection, whether of home grown or bought trees, and to keep their bonsai healthy and in good shape. It will answer questions for those who already have some experience with bonsai. All the tools and the skills needed are described, and a beautiful photographic compendium displays the top 24 species, both outdoor and indoor. Written by a master of the art, this how-to book is the perfect reference for bonsai owners at many levels of expertise.

Bonsai books abound, but [this] may convince me to try again. It combines aesthetic appreciation with lucid practical advice, along with helpful drawings. Prescott deals with almost every facet of the art

About the Author

David Prescott was only eight years old when he grew a miniature Scots Pine from seed. Though he admits that he has created better bonsai since then, his first attempt still lives and thrives. Prescott has studied with masters such as Salvatore Liporace, Colin Lewis and Kevin Wilson, and won awards at congresses of the European Bonsai Association. In 2000, he assisted well-known bonsai author and nurseryman Peter Chan in preparing his trees for display at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, where their entry was awarded a gold medal. David Prescott teaches an enthusiastic group of bonsai practitioners and is in great demand on the UK Bonsai Club circuit.Formally trained as a garden designer, Colin Lewis has potted and repotted, pruned and wired his way through the years, first as a bonsai student, now as an experienced practitioner, teacher, judge, author and founder of Bonsai magazine. He has won many international awards, including the Chelsea Flower Show’s Gold Medal, both for bonsai he has created and for the photography of bonsai.Neil Sutherland’s photographs include still life, portraits, natural history, food, landscape, and travel over the course over more than 25 years. His work has been published in books and magazines throughout the world
